A. Žigman at the insurance conference “It's Getting Hot – Temperature is Rising, is Insurance Cooling?”

On 5 September 2024, an international conference was held in Ljubljana under the title "It's Getting Hot – Temperature is Rising, is Insurance Cooling?", bringing together international experts and scientists from various fields. They discussed the effects of climate change on the insurance market, ways to reduce the insurance gap and the need to find effective solutions for climate and asset protection.

Year after year, we have been witnessing dramatic effects of climate change, leading to an increase in extreme weather and financial losses. The conference participants discussed the challenges of the insurance gap from different perspectives and ways to reduce it. They also talked about recent trends in predicting natural disasters - a key requirement for planning measures to mitigate their consequences.

The introductory presentations were followed by a panel discussion entitled "Bridging the Gap”, involving Ante Žigman, President of the Board of Hanfa, as well as Marko Jazbec, Chairman of the Management Board at Sava Re, Gregor Stražar, Chairman of the Management Board at Triglav Re, Doris Pöpplein, Vice President at P&C Reinsurance, Swiss Reinsurance Company Ltd, and Professor Karel Van Hulle, KU Leuven.

The afternoon session entitled "Searching for solutions" discussed strategies that could effectively manage climate risks and the solutions for insurance against natural disasters. The widening insurance gap underlines the need for urgent and comprehensive measures to strengthen protection against natural disasters, with a focus on cooperation between the state, the insurance sector and consumers.
